Inspired by Natural Living
Our Story: Rooted in Community & Food Freedom
At Jones Creek Farm & Nursery, we believe that the best things in life are grown with intention, handled with care, and shared with our neighbors. Nestled on our 20-acre homestead in Midway, Georgia, our farm is a labor of love. We live and work alongside our dairy goats, cows, free-range poultry, and honeybees, dedicated to sustainable, chemical-free agriculture and the food freedom movement.
What started as a passion for simple, genuine food and sustainable living has blossomed into a bustling neighborhood hub. Whether you are visiting us in person at our physical farm stand or connecting with us here online, our mission remains the exact same: to provide wholesome, high-quality goods that nourish your body, inside and out.
Local Bureaucracy: The fight to keep the farm stand open
For our local neighbors, our on-site farm stand has always been about more than just transactions—it is packed with fresh, seasonal harvests and serves as a vibrant showcase of local talent. We have been proud to partner with exceptional local farmers, cottage food bakers, and creators to offer a true, community-centered country farm stand.
Right now, that mission is being threatened by heavy-handed red tape and the prohibitive costs of navigating county regulations. Liberty County officials have recently taken the position that our farm stand does not fit their definition of a traditional farm stand, classifying us instead as a full retail store and demanding an expensive, full-scale commercial retail license to stay open. The costs and structural requirements to meet this commercial standard are simply too steep for a small agricultural setup like ours.
I am hopeful we can work collaboratively with county officials to find a practical solution by creating a sensible, distinct ordinance tailored specifically for small farm stands. If given the opportunity to meet with our county commissioners, this is the proposal I will bring to the table:
The Farm Stand Exemption Proposal We want to establish a common-sense classification that sits a step below full retail licensing. To qualify for this farm stand designation, two core criteria must be met:
On-Site Location: The farm stand must be physically located on an active farm.
Local Origin: The products sold must be limited to those produced on that farm and other local farms in Georgia, as well as local cottage food bakers, and artists. (No mass produced products you’d find in a retail store.)
By establishing an ordinance based on these two boundaries, we naturally limit who qualifies while strictly preserving the spirit of what a farm stand is supposed to be: a localized hub for homegrown food and agricultural heritage.
Recent state-level measures in Georgia have moved toward loosening burdens to encourage agritourism and support local growers across our state. It is my sincere hope that Liberty County and Jones Creek Farm can work hand in hand to pave the way for true food freedom, economic common sense, and thriving local agriculture right here at home.
